Mike poses the question “If you go back to where you were at 10 years ago, could you have ever imagined your life would be this great?”

“If you talk to anybody who’s done anything amazing in life, you’re going to hear at some point in time – I didn’t know exactly what it was going to look like, but I was just trusting my gut, I was just doing what I knew I needed to do next.”

FULL TRANSCRIPTION:

Thank you for joining me on the Investing for Freedom podcast. Today I’m going to talk to you about intuition. As I was coming into 2021, I was really just thinking about what I really wanted to lean into this year and my kind of theme this year is “lean into it,” really lean internally, lean into my intuition. And I really believe that a lot of us that are probably listening to this podcast are, that we’re hard-chargers where we’re studying leadership, we’re studying business, we’re studying investing, we’re studying growth, which all that is great. I’m a huge advocate. Like we need to be constantly learning, expanding our minds. A lot of that even our subconscious capture so much more than our conscious does. And so just connecting those two is really something that’s really important to me this year. Because I think I firmly believed that our minds can only capture so much in the conscious realm and I don’t want to get too far deep on that, but at the same time, I think we really have to learn to just trust our intuition at times.

This is not something that is popular probably in leadership or business books, but you know the old saying, trust your gut. I’ve done so many amazing things in life, investments that I’ve done, businesses that I’ve started. I’m not saying in any way, shape, or form that you don’t need to do analysis or run proformas or, do due diligence or any of that. But when you know, you know assuming that you’re tapping into your intuition, trusting your gut.

And you can also trust your gut and make mistakes too. So I’m not saying that this is a black and white thing, but I think the more that we lean into our intuition and the more we like to hone that gift and skill that we all have, some people would refer to it as a sixth sense. And you might be saying, Mike, you’re getting kind of crazy. You’re getting kind of out there. Well, I just want to encourage you and challenge you to maybe just open your mind a little bit. And not only I want to connect a couple of things for you because I believe that our intuition, I think our minds and our bodies are more connected. People will say my heart, I feel in my heart a certain way. I feel in my mind, like my mind’s thinking, we kind of look at our, like our body and our system is like, two different beings or three different beings or whatever. I’m fully convinced that our body, that our hearts, that our entire network, our entire system, we are probably like the greatest supercomputer that has ever been created. And I think if we really just learned to lean into that intuition, I think you’re going to get a lot further in life.

So there’s a scripture in the Bible that I really love. It’s in Ephesians 3:20. And it says to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask, think, or imagine according to the power that works in us. Now, if you’re not a believer in Jesus, in the Bible, or whatever, don’t tune me out yet. Because I don’t it doesn’t really matter to me where you’re coming from a faith basis. I don’t care if you’re Muslim. I don’t care if you’re Buddhist. I don’t even care if you’re atheist. You have to believe that there’s some sort of miracle in life, even if you’re just an atheist or you’re agnostic. Like you have to admit that there’s, even a high level of coincidence in air quotations if you will. I just happened to be a believer and I believe that we’re fearfully and wonderfully made. And I just, I look at that body that I was talking about just the supercomputer that’s a brain. And I just like, I can’t question that there’s something, bigger than me out there that’s just, I’m not in any way saying that they’re controlling what we do or, I believe in free will, but I do believe that we’re just fearfully and wonderfully made. And I think there’s something amazing out there, that’s just got us all connected together.

And so, again, even if you don’t believe in Jesus or even a God period, like you can’t explain away every coincidence, like even the fact that we’re energetically connected. Okay, so what am I talking about today? To him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask think or imagine, I found myself really in a lot of conversations lately, I had a guy the other day, a friend of mine, we were on the golf course. And this guy’s just done amazing things in life. And he said to me in passing, he said, do you think that knowing where I’m at right now, that, in 10 years I could be at X. And I asked him the simple question that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Well, if you look backwards 10 years, so this is the question I asked him. If you looked backwards 10 years, would you have been able to expect, or as the scripture says, think or imagine that you could be where you’re at today. And his answer to me was no, actually, if I look backwards 10 years, I could have never imagined that life could be this good.

And he said, in fact, if I go backwards for years, I wouldn’t have imagined that my life would be this good today. And what does life good mean? That’s different for everyone. That’s the thing that I’m constantly talking about with the freedom formula. What do you really want? Why do you want it? What are you going to do to get it? Measure results and adjust? We all have to measure results. We all have to adjust, but the first part of that is all up to you. Like, what do you really want? Why do you want it? What are you going to do to get it?

But the thing that I want to connect to you today, and the reason why I started out with intuition and just leaning into your gut and part of this might be meditation. Part of it might just be reading. Part of it might just be slowing down and taking an extra vacation day. There are so many people that I talk to that think that they’re becoming successful because they’re grinding seven days a week. And they’re doing this for their family. I’m working 70, 80, 90 hours a week, but it’s for my family, your family doesn’t give a crap. Your family doesn’t give a crap if they don’t know you. Your family doesn’t give a crap about how much money you make if they never see you. Your family doesn’t give a crap how successful you are or how much money you’re going to leave to them if they spent, 40, 50 years with you and didn’t ever really know what drives you, motivates you, encourages you.

And so, like, I really want to just kind of address that because I think that we can accomplish so much more by leaning into our intuition and slowing down and really tapping into our subconscious. Just one great idea. All you need in life is one great idea, and it doesn’t even have to be like a blue ocean idea, like some new concept, like Elon Musk and Tesla. It doesn’t have to be like that. It doesn’t have to be like Steve jobs and the Mac computer. You might get one of those by the way, but it doesn’t have to be that. It could just be, I’m a plumber by trade. I’ve said this so many times, and I’ll never forget working in Wendover, Nevada, out of town. Kara’s pregnant with our third child and I’m working, literally 110 hours a week sometimes. And I’ll never forget sitting in the hotel room and just dreaming about doing business a better way, like the customer service experience. And I didn’t know what any of that was. I couldn’t have interpreted that at that point in time, but fast-forwarding, we built one of the largest, fastest-growing service companies, literally in America. We were on the Inc fastest-growing companies in America in 2009. And that all came out of my intuition, that came out of me following my gut.

I did not have a 22 step plan to get on the Inc 2009 fastest growing companies in America list. That was never on my target. I did not have a goal when I set out to do that to literally be the largest service company in the town and to disrupt the way that service was done, disrupt the way that marketing was done, become a better employer. I didn’t have any of that on my list of goals, and a lot of times I think we think that we have to sit down, and we have to map everything out. It’s just not the case. Sometimes you just need to, I think I talked about this in the last podcast or a couple of go, but just make the next right move.

So many of us are frozen because we’re trying to map everything out in our heads. And really what we need to do is lean into our intuition, trust my heart. How many times have you heard that? I just trusted my gut. I just knew that I needed to do something. If you talk to anybody who’s done anything amazing in life. You’re going to hear at some point in time, I didn’t know exactly what it was going to look like, but I was just trusting my gut. I was just doing what I knew I needed to do next.

Now here’s the thing. Sometimes people can look backwards. It’s easy to look backwards and create a 15 step process that I use to get X done. I agree with that. But very seldom does somebody create a 15 step process looking forward, this is how I’m going to do X. Usually, it’s like, I have this concept. I have this vision, this is what I want to accomplish. And we start moving through it. And guess what? Life is messy. Business is messy. Relationships are messy, but you got to continue moving through it.

And so here’s, I’ll pull this back together to what I was saying. My buddy, his name is Lynn. When he posed this question, what did he say? He said, I couldn’t have even imagined four years ago that my life would be this good. And so what I’m challenging you with, number one, if you look backwards 20 years, 10 years, 5 years, this is the question I have for you. The same question that I asked Lynn, could you imagine that your life could be this great? And if the answer to that is no, then I just want you to really think about that because do you have to have everything figured out all the time, or do you just have to have kind of like a roadmap? Like I’m going from point A to point B and there’s a lot of different personality types in the world. And I completely understand that.

But I’m telling you right now that if you’re stuck in analysis paralysis, whether it’s buying your first investment property, whether it’s starting a business, whether it’s, it doesn’t matter what it is, if you’re stuck in analysis paralysis. And you’re one of those people that overanalyzes everything. And I don’t have my plan clearly spelled out and all that kind of stuff. Like I would just encourage you to meet us. There’s people like me that are like I said, are messy, I just get moving. And I’ve surrounded myself with a team of, project managers and planners and a great operator because I’m a visionary. And so I can get a little messy in the opposite corner. Some people could get stuck and frozen. I could be moving too fast and, just literally drive off the train tracks sometimes. And so we all need balance in our life. I completely understand that, but I’m telling you, if you just sit on the couch and keep just, writing out your vision and thinking how great it’s going to be, and you’re just trying to like, have the 22 step process you’re never going to get there.

So if you’re the other person that says to me, Mike, when I look back 5 years or 10 years, I thought I was going to be so much further along, I thought my life was going to be so much better, then I would just encourage you to do the same outcome that I’m talking about. So person number one realizes it that, they couldn’t have imagined such a great life person. Number two imagined a better life for themselves. And I think the answer is the same on both. We really need to start tapping into our intuition. We really need to lean internally. And whether you believe in God or whether you believe in the universe or whatever, I really think that we need to just slow down and tap into that. And that means something different for everyone. It might just be meditation. It might be, climbing Mount Everest. It might be, just carving out some time to read for 15 minutes every day, it might be taking a walk. I don’t know what that is for you. But what I do know for sure is that every answer that you need, and it doesn’t matter to me where that source comes from in your mind, this is what the scripture says. And if you’re sitting there again thinking, you’re tuning me out because I said scripture, let’s just say that it’s just good wisdom. That’s fine. Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think this is the important part, according to the power that works in us. That’s what I want you to tap into. That’s what I want you thinking about.

And again, that means something different for everyone, but the universe, God, whatever it is for you is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us, that means we have to do something, that means we have to tap into that power. That means that we have to learn to listen. That means that we have to slow down and silence, the lizard brain, right? Because the brain wants to just squawk at us all the time. It wants to plan. It wants to think, it wants to do. It wants to protect. It wants to keep us out of trouble. It wants to keep us safe. And the reality is we need to start tapping into our intuition, the heart of hearts, the gut, the thing that we know we need to go do, that power is in you. And it’s able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we could ask, think, or imagine. That power works in us. And so whatever that is for you today, I would just encourage you to lean into it.

So again, if you’re the person that couldn’t have imagined the amazing life, keep going, if you’re the person that said, Mike, I imagined my life to be much better, get some things in your life corrected. There’s something off, there’s something wrong. And maybe all that is corrected already. And you just haven’t figured out how to tap into that. But either one, I don’t care where you’re at in life. The difference between, amazing people that are doing amazing things and those that are not, they just learned to tap into it.

This is also why there’s a lot of wealthy people that are believers. There’s a lot of wealthy people that are not. I remember when I used to really be, super go to church and all that kind of stuff. And there was this thought that the more spiritual we are, the more God would bless us. And I don’t agree with that by the way. I think that there’s principles that exist in the world and anybody that taps into those is going to do well. Give, and it’ll be given back to you. That’s a principle that exists. God cannot lie. And so, if you’re a giving person or you tap into that intuition, or you tap into that power that works in you, you’re going to succeed in life. And so that’s why I think that there’s a lot of successful people in the world that are probably not the greatest person in the world, but they still succeed because they tap into principles.

So how much more you, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re at, no matter what the issue is that was keeping you from doing that, get off your couch, tap into your internal instinct, being lean into that. I truly believe that’s the success. I hope that helps you, go out there and make today great.
